last minute gift and travel ideas for Christmas

Christmas arts n' crafts

OK, I know Christmas is a long time away, but I need a lot of lead time on this. For the past couple years we've been giving someone funny portraits of their family in classical art styles. It's an excuse for me to learn another craft, and they've loved the presents so far. I want to outdo ourselves, but I'm not sure what we can do this year that will be fun and also remotely practical. My girlfriend and I have been doing this as a team. I'll come up with an idea, she'll make the design, and I'll fabricate the thing. Two years ago it was a Renaissance painting with people's heads photoshopped on, printed on canvas. Last year it was a small Bayeux-style tapestry, which I learned embroidery to make (although I couldn't finish it).

I want to keep upping the ante, or at least come up with something equally outlandish. Whatever we do has to be something she can design, but something I can learn to make in a few months. This is why there's an emphasis on crafts over sculpting or painting. It doesn't need to be perfectly executed, because the fun and effort are part of the gift, too (these are my favorite gifts that I have ever given, even the tapestry that I couldn't finish).

I am willing to consider any art styles from any geographical region or historical period.

I'm toying with the idea of an illuminated manuscript page, but I'm not overly excited about that. Are there any other ideas I should be considering? Please, have fun with this. I'd rather attempt something I can't pull off than limit myself ahead of time.
