The holidays make me want to crawl in a hole

I've never spent holidays alone. This year, it looks like I'll be spending Christmas and New Year's Eve by myself, because all my friends are coupled-up or already have plans that can't accommodate me (COVID is under control where we live, and we're allowed gatherings up to 5 people). I am also uninvited to a Christmas dinner by someone I have a situationship with. I'm feeling alone, anxious, and I'm spiralling into a hole. I dread Christmas. I've been taking more Ambien than I should so that I can sleep weekends away. I'm still doing well at my new job, as per my update in the last question I've posted, and still going to ballet, but it feels increasingly like I'm just a husk going through the motions. I've been on a couple dates since then and have rekindled an old flame with whom I've had a brief romance with more than a year ago.

Two days ago he said he wanted more, so I said okay, I'll be more present and try harder. Previously, I was not very responsive to his messages or calls, thinking they were only booty-calls, and I only saw him maybe twice a month, despite his persistence. I apologised and told him that I'd clear out my weekend for him this time. We can spend more time together and really date, I said.

We had a misunderstanding due to terrible communication on both our parts - I had thought it was just a purely physical thing so I didn't invest a lot of time or emotional energy into our relationship, not knowing that he had wanted more out of it. That caused him to "readjust [his] expectations", and he slept with two other people. I don't blame him, but I am resentful that he hadn't told me about it earlier. While we were in the throes of substance-induced limerance he asked me to come to his Christmas party and meet his friends. I asked if he was going to remember all this tomorrow, and he said yes. I asked why he liked me, and he said to stop interrogating him while we were having a good time.

The day after he said maybe it's going too soon for me to meet them, and I was overwhelming him: "First you barely even respond to my calls or texts, and treat me like a booty-call, and now suddenly you want to spend the whole weekend together. It's too much."

We had an argument, if I can call it that. I left his house. He said we'd speak again soon, but reiterated that I should make other plans for Christmas. He also emphasised the fact that he would not be seeing anyone else "while we figure this out".

I think I should mention here that he has issues with his own mental health and is also on antidepressants. He's still learning to be happy on his own, and I've seen him at his lowest, most promiscuous, most drunk, most whatever-the-fuck he is. And he insists I don't know the real him. We make sense as a couple, he says. We should try, he says. I feel like we can help each other, he says.

But here I am, uninvited to his Christmas party. Here I am, with no plans for Christmas and no friends to turn to. Here I am, wanting to crawl into a hole again. I don't think I will leap from the window of my building, but I feel dangerously enthralled by the idea of it.

Hive, I am in a mudpit. I crave affection and connection. I've been doing a good job taking care of myself and loving myself, but I don't think other people can love me. Hive, I am at the end of my rope. I've been doing the bestest I can in trying to improve myself and do all the live-laugh-love things I can do, but ultimately, at the end of the day, I crawl into bed alone, take four ambien, and sleep fourteen hours so I don't have to wake up and go through the motions knowing that ultimately, I cannot form a real connection with anyone.

I feel broken.

When do you Christmas? Need a timeline!

It happens every year. I celebrate Christmas in a pretty big way and always have lots of ambitions: cards, baking, gifts, decorating - but I am reluctant to start "too early." Then I end up 10 days before Christmas in a frantic jam trying to get it all done. I need a Christmas timeline! When do you do the things? What are your deadlines for getting things done? Specific queries below the fold. I think my issue is that I have this idea about "too early" but clearly I'm not starting early enough . This year we have no gatherings and things are a little simpler so it's a good time to plan for less stressful future Christmases. So I'd like to know specifically about your target dates for doing these things:
1. Starting your planning (list making etc)
2. Making or buying gifts (including beating shipping deadlines and out-of-stock issues)
3. Unpacking decorations
4. Actually decorating
5. Baking for food gifts (any tips on how you prevent things getting stale/yucky if made "too early?"
6. Writing cards
7. Actually sending cards
8. Wrapping gifts
9. House cleaning
10. What do you leave to do for pre-Christmas week itself?
11. What am I forgetting to plan in ahead of time?

Recommend high quality virtual Christmas Eve service

I would like to virtually attend a Christmas Eve service, and it's occurred to me that I could probably watch something of higher quality than a local church and that probably churches all over the world are doing something virtual. Can you recommend a church's Christmas Eve service that fits my criteria? I suppose a Christmas concert could work too, but my preference is to be in a sanctuary (virtually) if possible. My other preferences:

1. My ideal would be a traditional hymn/carol service. I'm ok with progressive or affirming messages/prayers/scripture, but no theatrical reenactments or conservative messages.
2. High quality choir and production. I have a couple local churches I've attended that I can easily google, but they are more DIY on the technology/streaming/audio and the choirs are small and just ok.
3. Livestream would be nice or I guess a recording. I'm in U.S. central time.
4. Prefer English language (though if you have recommendations in other languages I'd like to check those out).
5. I don't care about denomination as long as item 1 is met.

Christmas present for 10yo boy?

Looking for a bit of inspiration for a Christmas present for a ten year old boy. -Big interest in audiobooks, drones, lego, relaxing and nerf guns. The usual stuff I guess. He's just not a reader yet due to dyslexia. He's asked for a Hot Wheels set because a friend has a set but I'm thinking there's likely to be very limited actual mileage once Christmas morning is over and done with because he's already got a scalextric set he barely plays with.

So I guess I'm looking for left field suggestions I wouldn't necessarily find in 'Toys ᴙ Us' ? I'm not averse to making him something, either.

Ideally I'd like it to be something technical a bit like Lego Technics but something that doesn't cost the Earth. Top budget probably £100 $135

Thank you!

GiftFilter: subscription for sports fan?

Seeking recommendations for sports-oriented subscription websites with good articles and good discussion. The recipient:

- Liked reading Deadspin, but rarely commented.
- Has had unpleasant reddit subgroup experiences, and now pretends the site is read-only during occasional visits.
- Reads and posts on a computer, and would not use a phone app.
- Let a Sports Illustrated print subscription lapse 10-15 years ago.
- Follows US team sports all year and pays the most attention to baseball (MLB.TV subscriber, "MLB Radio" listener).
- Is a Mets fan, but did not like SB Nation's dedicated Mets forum.

Budget maximum is $150. Thus far, Defector.com's annual "Pal" level subscription (unlimited articles, commenting privileges, staff Q&As, newsletter) for $120 is in the lead, but is there a better option given the personal history? Are there discussion boards at The Athletic? (That yearly subscription usually runs $120, too, but lately a discounted rate pops up.) The pandemic shut down sports this year and next year's schedule is uncertain -- is a general-interest magazine website with a strong sports section and forum the way to go?

Thanks in advance.
